“Extra: Oscilloscope slates climate doc ‘Canary’” by Justin Anderson
Oscilloscope Laboratories sets theatrical release for science doc Canary
Oscilloscope Laboratories, the New York–based prodco and distributor launched by the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch in 2008, has slated a theatrical release for the new documentary Canary, about world-renowned climate scientist Dr. Lonnie Thompson.
Oscilloscope will release the film on September 15, followed by one-night-only special-event screenings across the U.S. starting on September 20.
Directed by Danny O’Malley and MIT-trained neuroscientist Alex Rivest, the doc follows Thompson — an explorer who Harvard geochemist Daniel Schrag calls “the closest living thing to Indiana Jones” — as he studies the history of Earth’s environment through glaciers atop the tallest mountains in the world, putting him at the forefront of the global climate change issue.
Canary is an End of the Road film and a Boardwalk Pictures and Act 4 Entertainment production. Co-directors Rivest and O’Malley also serve as producers along with Adam Paul Smith, while the executive producers are David G. Johnson, Andrew Fried, David S. Vogel, Thais Lopez Vogel, Wendy Schmidt, Ibrahim Alhusseini, Sarah Himadeh, JL Pomeroy, Dane Lillegard, Jordan Wynn and Caitlin McGinty.
